How a PhD thesis revolutionized auto-nesting and saved millions of dollars.
In 1999, Dr. Hamish Dean was deep in a PhD with an unglamorous obsession: how to pack container drums so that nothing — not a centimetre — was wasted. When word of that work reached Macpac, the New Zealand outdoor brand recognised the same problem in a very different material. The auto-nesting code Hamish wrote for Macpac’s fabric became the technical foundation of Shapeshifter — and the start of a twenty-year mission to take the guesswork out of how the world’s garments get made.
